With its first ship launched in August 2023, Explora Journeys is making sailing decidedly luxurious, distinguishing itself with a deeply European sensibility, and a focus on sustainability. “Personalized service and world class hospitality are at the forefront. Our hosts are dedicated to attending to every detail, so guests can fully embrace a state of mind characterized by calm, unity, elegance and joy,” says Koray Savas, Explora Journey’s vice president of hotel operations.

A nearly 1:1 guest to staff ratio and suites with floor to ceiling windows and private balconies ensure the experience is certainly lavish. It is also notably environmentally-focused. Of the company’s six planned ships launching by 2028, four will be powered by liquified natural gas, one of the cleanest-burning non-electric marine fuels. The MSC Group, which owns Explora Journeys, has pledged to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Like many of its fellow luxury travel companies, Explora Journeys has banned single-use plastic.

“Sustainability continues to be top of mind in the travel industry as more cruise lines implement and invest in eco-friendly practices,” says Savas. “From the very beginning, Explora Journeys prioritized our environmental impact and made a commitment to build the ships of tomorrow, featuring the very latest in environmentally supportive technologies and implementing alternative energy solutions as they become available.”

Beyond technology, Savas notes, Explora Journeys are promoting ecological experiences through their programming. On their Canary Islands sails, professional explorer Mike Horn leads a 6-hour extreme hike in Lanzarote and a biodiversity hike and sailing trip in La Palma.

For less intrepid travellers, the ships provide provides plenty of relaxation options. EXPLORA I and II have has 2,900 square feet of indoor and outdoor fitness facilities and a partnership with Technogym; four pools, a running track, 18 restaurants and bars. In a decidedly hectic world, one of Explora Journeys’ greatest offerings may simply be quiet joy of reading a book, admiring the view or soaking in one of the many outdoor whirlpools placed among 27,000 square feet of outdoor decks.

“Throughout the entire journey, guests have the luxury of choice,” Savas says, citing wellness options like the spa’s heated and cold water pools, steam room, salt cave, Finnish sauna and heated marble loungers; entertainment from musicians like pianist Francesco Parrino and classes on photography and cooking.

Even shopping options are curated to reflect the brand’s thoughtful European heritage and aesthetics. In addition to well-known luxury brands like Cartier, Rolex and Buccellati, whose first ever at sea boutique is on EXPLORA II, there are newer, innovative companies like Kampos, a Sardinian clothing and swimwear brand designed exclusively with recycled plastic bottles, abandoned fishing nets and other organic materials.

When they are sated with the ship’s myriad public spaces and facilities, guests can retreat to their well-appointed living quarters. The ships’ suites create a cocoon at sea, with heated marble bathroom floors, custom designed Frette bedding and bathrobes, views of an open, infinite horizon, and the inimitable feeling of serenity only the ocean provides.
