Located in the heart of one of the most glamorous Italian cities, Mandarin Oriental, Milan is an effortlessly stylish destination like no other. Here, Area Vice President of Operations and General Manager Luca Finardi shares design details that set the hotel apart, unique experiences the team can create for guests and the most delicious souvenirs to bring home with you.
"The atmosphere in the hotel’s guestrooms and suites reflects the calm and neutral side of the Milanese style. Tones of beige are delicately combined with black and white in the colour scheme to give these private spaces a quiet, understated feel, which is enhanced by superb acoustic damping."
The multi-disciplinary design practice Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel was commissioned to create a design that gave a sense of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s visual richness within a Milanese environment. The result is classic Milanese style that coexists with strongly decorative materials and intense colours, with the overall look nuanced by Citterio’s typical design language, neutral and rigorous. The work of several Italian design masters inspired the project, and this is particularly clear in two of our signature suites – the Fornasetti suite, which pays homage to great designer Piero Fornasetti and to his mesmerising world, and the Premier suite, which features iconic design pieces from Gio Ponti to Luigi Caccia Dominioni. Last but not least, our Mandarin Bar & Bistrot, with its black and white marble mosaic covering floor and walls, is an eclectic touch to the overall hotel design.

Tones of beige are delicately combined with black and white in the colour scheme to give these private spaces a quiet, understated feel, which is enhanced by superb acoustic damping. Upholstered headboards and other furniture items in several shades of beige complement the purple velvet of armchairs, curtains and carpets. Each bed is “embraced” by its arched headboard to create an intimate feel, with the bed immersed, yet separate from the rest of the room, and sofa backrests feature this same bended form, as an invitation to relaxation.

I’m glad to affirm that the team possesses a great expertise in designing unique experiences. I love that our guests can really enjoy Milan – and not only Milan – as an insider, giving the chance to visit private palazzos, ateliers, mansions and meeting inspiring personalities in design, art, fashion and culture.
The classic Risotto alla Milanese, but it’s our secret recipe!
The perfect Negroni, prepared by our Head Bartender, Antonio Rosato.
Ingredients: 30 ml Tanqueray 40 ml red vermouth Cocchi 45 ml bitter Campari Stir ingredients in a mixing glass and serve in an iced glass with an orange zest.
I would suggest to visit Rossana Orlandi Gallery, a not-to-be-missed spot to find inspiring design proposals.
A traditional dessert made by one of the famous and historical Milanese pastry shops such as Marchesi, Pasticceria Cova or Sant Ambroeus. And in December, a Panettone!
The ability to open my mind.
A precious gift after a long day.
