Tell us about the design of Halcyon House

The extensive renovations of Halcyon House were led by Sydney-based architect Virginia Kerridge, while the property’s 21 boutique rooms were each uniquely designed by Brisbane-based interior designer Anna Spiro. Many pieces and furnishings are vintage, including John Derian sofas, Madeline Weinrib rugs and drawings by Wayne Pate.

What are three interesting facts about the property that many are surprised to learn?

  1. Halcyon House was a former beach motel called Hideaway Hotel.

  2. We were featured Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List. A prestigious award.

  3. No two rooms are the same. Each is unique in its furnishings.

What touches do you believe make a room or suite feel like someone’s home-away-from-home?

Halcyon House’s interiors are designed for maximum comfort. Each room is unique, with its own bespoke wall coverings and art.

Walk us through your ideal stay at Halcyon House.

There is so much to do in the region, but many of our guests choose to stay put when they stay with us. It allows them to truly relax and enjoy the comforts and features of the hotel, such as the pool with food and beverage service as well as the spa and our award-winning “Hatted” restaurant, Paper Daisy. The ideal day, we think, is to have a wander along the beach after breakfast, then head to the spa for a pre-lunch treatment followed by some shopping in the boutique. Then, we’d lunch in Paper Daisy and spend the afternoon poolside with a few cocktails before dinner. Bliss!

What is your greatest indulgence at a hotel when you travel?

Dining, spa treatments and shopping.

Can you share your go-to in-room dining order?

I’ll typically ask the chef or hotel staff what they recommend and go with that, so that I don’t default to just ordering the same things. At Halcyon, we update our in-room dining menu seasonally, so it’s really hard to pick a favourite. Right now, we’re really loving the Kelp Baked Fish or, for something more snackable, you can’t go past the Grilled Wagyu and Rosemary Skewers or Green Rice Crumbed Prawns.

What is the most unique experience your team has put together for a guest?

Too many to list here! We’ve had international bands play, synchronised swimmers perform, surprise engagements with all the bells and whistles, and lots more. Our team can truly do it all.

If you only had 24 hours in Cabarita Beach, where would you visit?

Easy. It would be to spend them at Halcyon House, and perhaps have a surf lesson at Cabarita Beach – just voted Australia’s Best Beach 2020.

What do you believe is the greatest hidden gem in Cabarita Beach?

I think if you speak to our guests they would say it was us! But, there are so many great pockets to our beautiful location.

In your opinion, what is the best time of year to visit Cabarita Beach?

It sounds cheesy, but honestly we are blessed with beautiful seasons in our location. Our winters are mild and offer sunny, warm days and cool evenings. Many of our guests escape to the region from their colder climates during that time of year. Summer is wonderful too, as we are on the beach and there is really nothing like cooling off in the ocean or the pool on a hot summer day.

Why do you travel?

Travel enriches your life. I love meeting new people and sharing new experiences abroad.

How do you define luxury?

Luxury is about comfort and attention to detail. The little touches make all the difference.

What does it feel like to wrap yourself in Frette?

Luxurious! It’s like Halcyon House in a towel.
