the INTERVIEW

We had the exclusive opportunity to sit down with Mr. Lighter, the proprietor of Matachica Resort & Spa.

What was the design inspiration for Matachica Resort & Spa?

The rooms at Matachica are uniquely decorated with hints of Central American motifs and original art collected from around the world including several pieces from Belgian artist Peter Terrin. We wanted to ensure an intimate and local feel in the villas, which are vibrantly colored and topped with authentic thatched roofs. Each villa features mosaic bathrooms, Frette linens and duvets, hammocks from Guatemala and private patios with DEDON furniture and Tucci umbrellas. Each room is screen-free to encourage guests to completely unplug, unwind and re-connect to what matters most in life.

For an even more indulgent stay, guests can stay in the new Luxury Beachfront Villas, complete with a private Jacuzzi overlooking the beach.

What is unique about your property?

From the moment visitors arrive at Matachica’s private pier, they will instantly begin to unplug and unwind as they take in the white-sand beach, lush tropical greenery and the unique beauty of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Whether seeking underwater adventures, the pampering of a full-service spa, or an intimate getaway with someone you cherish, Matachica Resort & Spa is the ultimate escape.

Awarded ‘Best For Romance' by Condé Nast Johansens, and ranked one of the Top 25 Hotels for Romance in TripAdvisor's 2017 Travelers' Choice Awards, Belize's Matachica Resort & Spa is the perfect spot for couples to escape in pure seclusion. The hotel offers signature couples tours including a peaceful snorkel adventure at San Pedro’s Mexico Rocks Marine Reserve. Couples can explore the rich coral and marine life in a secluded oasis, finally retreating to the beach to sip champagne while watching the Belizean sunset over the Ambergris Caye lagoon.

What was important about having Frette in your property?

Frette is the leader in linens of unparalleled quality, using the finest fibers and skilled artisans to create products that embody luxury and comfort, which perfectly aligns with the values and identity of Matachica Resort & Spa.

How does Frette add to the design of the hotel?

Offering Frette products is an important part of the considered and immaculate experience and service that we offer at the property. Our clients can take comfort in the fact that we choose the highest end range of products so that they can indulge in complete escapism and comfort. As a favorite destination amongst couples celebrating honeymoons and anniversaries, the bedding and linen should feel completely luxe. The bed should be a retreat in itself!

What are the three most important elements when designing a bedroom/room?

1. As the ultimate place of refuge, rest and love, it is vital to build the perfect bed. Where we sleep is the most important part of a hotel experience. We often have guests ask at the end of our stay about our bedding, as they feel incredibly rested.

2. Local touches: it is important to feel connected to the local culture of where one is staying. We work closely with local Central American artists and artisans to ensure our clients feel engaged with the country they are visiting.

3. Comfort: From our hammocks created in Guatemala with views of the Caribbean Sea, to the beautiful Tucci terrace furniture, every detail is considered to ensure ultimate relaxation.

What does it feel like to wrap yourself in Frette?

It feels like holiday – ultimate comfort and escape from the everyday.

How do you define luxury?

Luxury is having the time to unplug; reconnect to our loved ones and what is important in life; and the time to stay in bed all day if desired!

If you only have 72 hours in the city what would you recommend doing or seeing?

Discover the ancient Mayan ruins on a tour that explores the impressive hand-built temples, large palaces, pyramids, monuments and shrines Canoe in a cave Dive the famous Blue Hole Take a fly-fishing excursion to the Ambergris Caye to catch the most amazing bonefish Gaze out toward the Caribbean Sea in a hammock

What is your favourite restaurant in the city?

Matachica’s award-winning Mambo restaurant is widely considered to be one of the best in the country. Adorned with exotic paintings, candelabras, handcrafted Belizean art and rich mahogany furniture, Mambo will excite your palate with locally inspired dishes such as curried island shrimp, sautéed and served with a puree of yucca, and sprinkled with a corn, rum and papaya chutney, and fresh grouper prepared with paprika, garlic, olive oil and lime zest and served with char-roasted local corn. Mambo offers a carefully selected list of international wines, while the wonderful bar team make it a point of pride to create the most enticing cocktails.
