the INTERVIEW

Bjorn Bjornsson
Bjorn Bjornsson

We sat down with interior designer Bjorn Bjornsson to find out what inspires his passion for interior design and get his take on important style elements of interior design.

What inspired your passion for interior design?

Different spaces inspire me. I have always enjoyed walking into a space and viewing it like a blank white canvas. The possibilities of what you can do with that space are endless.

Who are your (design) mentors?

I never had a mentor. I always enjoyed and admired other people’s work but I never latched on to someone to say they were my mentor.

What art field are you most interested in?

Any kind of art. I do love abstract modern art and to look at different pop-up art galleries. Listening to different artists and their ideas will always make the art much more interesting to me.

"I find that bedding is most important because that is usually the focal point of the room."

What are the most important decorative elements in your home?

My kitchen has beautiful detail and accessories. I love to cook, so the way my kitchen looks is important to me.

What are your three most important elements when designing a bedroom/room?

I find that bedding is most important because that is usually the focal point of the room. Paint color and lighting follow closely behind.

From your experience, what is the best decorating advice you can offer someone?

Hire a professional. Often when I get a job I find that they tried to do it on their own, and most of the time it will cost the client more to fix the problem that could have been avoided.

What's your Frette Masterpiece? (Your favourite Frette piece)

I was at the showroom yesterday and the SS18 collection is absolutely stunning, although it’s hard for me to choose a favorite, Essence of Jungle is what I would choose for my own personal bedroom.

"I look out at the sky and water and [Iceland] gives me the tranquil lifestyle feeling I grew up with."

What is your most cherished piece in your bedroom?

My white furry throw, it’s so beautiful, warm and inviting.

Where do you go for design inspiration in the New York area or when in Iceland?

New York and Iceland are two totally different places, however, I have been inspired from living in both places. I would say my New York inspiration comes from the people, the pop-up art, and the entire NY Vibe. Any New Yorker would know exactly what I’m talking about.

Iceland is an entirely different feel, when I’m there I’m inspired in a different way. I am in touch with nature. I look out at the sky and water and it gives me the tranquil lifestyle feeling I grew up with.

What is your favorite book, magazine, or site related to design?

Magazines for design are the typical Architectural Digest , Interior Design , Florida Design , and I do love the European Design Magazine .

What is on your nightstand?

My high polished steel lamp, and an antique glass, and the book I am currently reading.
