the INTERVIEW

We looked to interior designer ROBERT COUTURIER to discover what inspires him and hear his perspective on the most important elements of designing a room.

What determined your passion for design?

In a strange way wanting to make people truly happy in their home, and making their home as beautiful as they possibly could. And of course I have always been interested and fascinated by design!

What inpires you?

Everything inspires me but I have to say that if I am not inspired by the client I will not be inspired by the project.

How can you refresh your linens for the New Year?

Well.... buy a new set of bed linens personally there is no greater feeling than slipping in a bed made with fresh linen sheets...

Can you remember your first design project?

Of course! It was a friend of mine's apartment in Paris on the top floor of a beautiful 18th century townhouse.

What field of design are you most interested in?

Furniture from all times and all periods...

What is the best decorating advice you can offer someone?

Only listen to yourself; the people whose advice you are seeking only think of themselves and their own desires when they answer your questions, you are the only interested party.

What is your favorite book, magazine, or site on design?

Favorite book would be on Jean Michel Frank, magazine would be AD and Elle Deco and site of course First Dibs.

What are the most important elements when designing a bedroom/room?

Peace of mind!!! And that varies wildly from person to person, you only have to hope that the person sharing your life has the same desires....

What does it feel like to wrap yourself in Frette sheets or Frette bath?

Comfort and security!!

Do you prefer your sheets to be linen, sateen, percale, or poplin?

Definitely linen!

What is on your bedside table?

Books books books...

How often should you update your bedroom?

There is no recipe; I changed the wall fabric last year, I think it has to do with how you feel, it might be that for reasons of comfort you should never change your bedroom...
