What was your design inspiration for The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin?
The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin inherits a unique heritage, in the heart of the former British Concession of the former Treaty Port for European and American traders. Its surrounding architecture reflects this rich 19th century history – and the hotel's regal Neoclassical-style façade, designed by the Tianjin Academy of Urban Planning and Design, pays homage to it. From the exterior, The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin looks like a prominent historical landmark from that bygone era, when classicism and eclecticism merged in the construction style of the time, blending European and Chinese architectural aesthetics, representative of the nations that traded with China in past centuries. This design theme, capturing the essence of the city's history, continues with the interiors, blending past and present, authenticity and luxury, innovation and state-of-the-art technology.
World-renowned luxury hospitality interior architecture firm Pierre-Yves Rochon (PYR) was tasked with realizing The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin’s vision of interiors integrating elements from both Eastern and Western cultures. The design intent was to create “authentic, yet subtle classical interiors, immediately distinguishable from any other hotel”, while of course providing the highest quality and comfort for guests. Interior design and detailing therefore took part of its cue from the nostalgic architecture of the hotel’s exterior, adopting the basic principles of English Neoclassical style – balance, symmetry and proportion.

Ancient Culture Street—a recreation of a Qing Dynasty commercial thoroughfare—is only minutes away from us. Along its length, craftsmen and retailers peddle traditional handicrafts such as cloisonné, double-sided embroidery, jade carvings and ceramics.
